About Oban

Oban is the second largest town in the West Highlands, after Fort William, with a population of 10,000 people. The total population swells to 25,000 in peak tourist season (June - August) with the influx of visitors and seasonal workers. Oban sits in a sheltered bay, protected from westerly winds by the island of Kerrera, and is unusual in that it grew up around its whisky distillery (founded 1794) and is crowned by a colosseum type building known as McCaig's Tower. From its humble origins as a fishing village, Oban grew to become a 19th Century resort, primarily owing to the arrival of the railway line from Glasgow which reached the town on 1880. Most of the older buildings date from the boom time of the 1880s and 1890s when may of the large hotels and guest houses were built.
